Principal Park is set on the edge of downtown Des Moines. Seats along the first base line or in right field offer a nice view of the field with the city behind it, and the back side of the outfield concourse offers views of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers coming together with the state cap. building beyond.
Principal Park includes some nice touches that add to the overall game day experience. There is a fountain in the right field corner that would be enjoyable in the hot summer months (not so much in April when I was there), a high wall in right field that includes a hand-operated scoreboard and atop which there is a great view of the game, and an old-fashioned lighted sign in the concourse with the day’s lineups.
One architectural note about the stadium is that the “main” entrance behind home plate really didn’t appear to be used by many fans – the parking lot is on the other side where there are ticket windows and gates.
